The honest explainer

What "mobile car detailing" actually means.

A mobile detail is a complete cleaning and restoration of your car performed at your address — driveway, office parking lot, apartment carport — by an operator who arrives in a van with water, power, and the chemistry to do the job properly.

It is not a hand-wash with a microfiber towel. A real mobile detailer will spend three to six hours on a typical sedan: a foam pre-treatment to lift road grime without abrasion, a clay-bar decontamination pass that pulls embedded brake dust and tree sap from the clear coat, hot-water extraction on the carpets and seats, leather cleaning and conditioning, vent and crevice work that reaches places a vacuum doesn't, and a paint sealant or coating to slow the next round of contamination.

On the higher end of the menu — paint correction and ceramic coating — the detailer is a paint specialist with $5,000+ of machine polishers and chemistry training. A two-stage correction and a multi-year ceramic on a luxury vehicle can take two days and runs $1,500 to $3,500. That is a different job than a weekend wash and you should price it that way in your head.

The reason "mobile" matters: your car never leaves your sight, there's no shuttle, no waiting room, no half-day lost. The good mobile detailers are sole proprietors or two-person teams who care more about repeat business than volume; the bad ones are the same gig-economy churn you find on Thumbtack. Our job is to surface the first kind and skip the second.

Services we route

Five jobs. Every detailer on the network specializes in at least one.

Ceramic Coating
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer (typically SiO₂ or quartz-based) that chemically bonds to your clear coat, creating a hydrophobic, scratch-resistant layer. Done correctly, it survives daily UV, road salt, and a hand wash routine for two to five years.

DIY vs. pro

You can do this yourself. Should you?

The cheap version of an exterior detail is achievable in a weekend with $80 of supplies — a foam cannon, a pH-neutral wash, a microfiber drying towel, a clay bar, and a sealant. The hard parts are paint correction (you can permanently burn through the clear coat with a rotary polisher) and interior extraction (a rental carpet extractor leaves the seats damp for two days and half-clean).

A reasonable rule: if the car costs more than $20,000 or you plan to keep it more than three years, the math favors a professional twice a year and a quick wash in between. Anything involving paint correction, ceramic coating, or pet biohazard goes to a pro — full stop.

The other reason to use a pro: time. A weekend DIY full detail is 6–8 hours, plus a trip to the store, plus the cleanup. A mobile detailer arrives in your driveway, the car never moves, and by the time you finish your second coffee they're handing you keys to a car that smells correct.

Coverage

5,544 detailers. 30 metros. ~80% of the country within ten miles.

Vehicle types

Sedans, SUVs, trucks, luxury — the price grid is not flat.

Sedan
Base price
The reference vehicle every detailer prices off of. A 4-door compact at the floor, a Camry/Accord at the median, an Audi A6 at the top.
SUV / Crossover
+25% to +40%
More interior square footage and a third row to extract; carpets take longer; cargo area often has pet hair, sand, or construction grit.
Pickup truck
+30% to +60%
Beds get hand-treatment for rust and mud; running boards and wheel wells need decontamination; lifted trucks are extra because the detailer is on a stepladder.
Luxury / exotic
+50% to +200%
Soft, expensive clear coat that punishes mistakes; specialty leather; brand-certified detailers only. Insurance matters here — confirm coverage before booking.
Why mobile

Drop-off detailing made sense in 1995. It doesn't anymore.

The traditional model of detailing assumed you'd hand the keys over at 8am, ride home, and pick the car up at 5pm — a full workday gone, plus the rideshare both ways. The mobile detail unwinds that assumption: the operator's van is the shop. Power, water, vacuum, polisher, lift, every chemistry — it all rolls up to your driveway. You don't lose the car, the time, or the ride home.

The second under-discussed advantage is that the same person touches your car every time. At a brick-and-mortar shop, the person who polished your paint last March is rarely the same person who has the buffer in their hands this December. A mobile detailer is almost always the owner-operator. They remember which side panel had the stone chip, which seat had the spill, which corner of the headliner the toddler reached. That continuity is impossible to replicate at scale and it shows up in the quality of the third visit.

The third — and this is the one nobody says out loud — is safety. A real detail involves chemistry strong enough to lift embedded grit out of clear coat. A bad detailer with a rotary polisher and the wrong pad combination can permanently burn the paint in under thirty seconds. When the work happens in your driveway and the operator is a sole proprietor whose phone number is in your contacts, accountability is built in.

For people who hand-wash their own car between professional visits, the mobile model has another quiet benefit: you can watch how the pro does it. Most reputable detailers will explain their process if you ask — which sealant they're applying, why they're starting on the wheels, where they're claying versus polishing. Two hours of casual observation is worth more than every YouTube tutorial you've watched.

That said, mobile detailing has real limits. Multi-stage paint correction and ceramic coating both want a covered, climate- stable environment for the cure window. A good detailer will tell you if they can do a job at your address or if the work needs to happen at their shop. If you hear "yeah we can do it on your driveway in any weather," push back — that's a red flag, not a perk.

Common challenges

The eight problems detailers see most.

Pet hair embedded in carpet
A rubber detailer brush plus hot-water extraction lifts what a vacuum can't. Plan on +$40–$80 over the base interior detail.
Coffee, juice, food spills
Fresh spills extract clean; old ones need enzyme cleaner and patience. Tell the detailer the age and source — it matters.
Water spots on paint
Surface spots wipe off with a mineral remover. Etched spots need polishing. A good detailer tests with their fingernail.
Swirl marks under sunlight
The signature of an automatic car wash. One-stage machine correction removes 80–90% in 3–4 hours.
Cigarette smoke odor
Ozone treatment + cabin-air filter swap removes the smell at the source. Surface sprays only mask it.
Brake dust on wheels
An iron-fallout remover dissolves embedded particles. Wax afterwards or it returns within a month.
Bird droppings & tree sap
Both etch into clear coat within hours in summer. Clay-bar decon + spot polish is standard; a ceramic coat slows the next round.
Leather wear and cracking
A pH-balanced cleaner followed by a UV-blocking conditioner slows the next stage. Cracked leather needs a re-dye, not a detail.
When and how

Two questions every detailer wishes you'd ask.

When in the year should I detail?

The defensible answer is twice — once at the end of winter to undo the road salt, brake dust, and grit; once at the start of fall to repair summer's bird droppings, sap, and bug-strike, and to put a fresh sealant on before the snow comes back. People in mild climates can drop to once a year. People in coastal climates with year-round salt exposure should detail three times.

Outside of those seasonal anchors, schedule a detail two weeks before any of: a road trip longer than 8 hours, a vehicle sale, an end-of-lease inspection, or the photos for an insurance claim. Detail-before-photograph is the single highest-leverage 4-hour decision a car owner makes.

Is mobile detailing eco-friendly?

The good mobile detailers run a closed-loop water system: a collection mat under the car catches the runoff so the soaps and contaminants don't enter the storm drain. Some are steam-based or "waterless" — they use a high-lubricity spray and microfiber to lift dirt without rinse runoff. These are legitimate options for most jobs, though heavily-soiled vehicles still want a real foam-and-rinse.

The bad mobile detailers run a garden hose into the street. That's an environmental violation in most U.S. municipalities, and it should make you ask other questions about their work. When the concierge surfaces your three options, the eco-method is in the merchant brief — ask, and you get the honest answer.

Frequently asked

Questions we get before the first message.

How is this different from Yelp or Thumbtack?
Yelp shows you fifty results and asks you to read every review. Thumbtack auctions your lead to whoever bids fastest. We ask you five questions, then pre-screen five to ten detailers in your area against your specific car and needs, and surface only the three best matches — each with a reason we picked them.
What does mobile car detailing cost?
Nationally, a full mobile detail runs $220 to $450 for sedans and SUVs. Add-ons like pet hair removal ($40–$80), ceramic coating ($600–$2,000), and paint correction ($300–$1,500) are priced separately. Your concierge will surface real local quotes — not industry averages.
Do you charge me anything?
No. neardetailer.com is free for car owners. We're paid by detailers only when a real booking is confirmed — which keeps our incentives aligned with finding you someone good, not someone who paid for placement.
How fast can I get my car detailed?
Median time from finishing the intake to a confirmed slot is under two hours. 78% of bookings happen the same day or next day. Same-week availability is essentially guaranteed in our top 30 metros.
What if I don't know what service I need?
That's exactly what the concierge is for. Tell it what bothers you — pet smell, water spots, swirl marks under sunlight, a lease return next week — and it figures out whether you need an interior detail, paint correction, ceramic coating, or something else.
Are these detailers vetted?
Every detailer on the platform has a verified Google Business Profile, at least fifteen reviews with a 4.3+ average, a photo portfolio, and an active phone number. We re-score the network weekly and drop anyone whose rating slips below the bar.
Can I get a quote without talking to anyone?
Yes. The concierge surfaces price ranges based on local market data plus your specific request. If you want a firm number, the listing-page quote form sends your specs to one detailer and they reply by email. No phone tag required.
What if a detailer doesn't show up?
Tell us within 48 hours. We drop the detailer's match score immediately and route you to the next-best option in your area. Our quality bar is enforced by what happens after the booking, not just before.
